BFI The Trilogy of Life
87.98 AUD
In the early 1970s, the great Italian poet, philosopher and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini (Salò, or The 120 Days of Sodom) brought to the screen a trio of masterpieces of premodern world literature - Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and The Thousand and One Nights (often known as The Arabian Nights) - and in doing so created his most uninhibited and extravagant work, which he titles his Trilogy of Life. In this brazen and bawdy triptych, the director set out to challenge consumer capitalism and celebrate the uncorrupted human body while commenting on contemporary sexual and religious mores and hypocrisies. His scatological humour and rough-hewn sensuality leave all modern standards of decency behind; these are physical, provocative, and wildly entertaining films, all extraordinarily designed by Dante Ferretti (Hugo) and featuring evocative music by Ennio Morricone.Special features:Presented in High DefinitionIncludes both Italian-language and English-language versions of all three filmsNotes for an African Oresteia (1970, 73 mins): Pasolini s visual notes for an unrealised film projectPasolini and the Italian Genre Film (2009, 37 mins)Deleted scenes (1974, 21 mins): deleted scenes from Pasolini's Arabian NightsOriginal trailers for all three filmsFully illustrated booklet with essays, reviews and biographiesOther extras TBC

BFI The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands
56.98 AUD
A stunning new restoration of a British World War One epic, this is one of the greatest British films from the silent era. Originally released in 1927 to great acclaim and popularity, The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands is an exciting recreation of two key battles faced by the Royal Navy in the early days of World War One. The first major engagement between German and British ships at Coronel was a terrible defeat for Britain with the loss of two warships. Later the British responded in a desperate bid to save the morale of a nation at war. The stunning restoration has a stirring new score by award-winning composer Simon Dobson, commissioned by the BFI and performed, appropriately, by 24 members of the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines in honour of the 24 members of the band who lost their lives with the sinking of HMS Monmouth at the battle of Coronel.
BFI That Kind of Girl (The Flipside) [Dual Format Edition]
63.98 AUD
In 1960s London, a beautiful continental au pair finds herself wrestling with the affections of an earnest peace-protestor, a dashing young toff and a roguish older man. But fun and freedom turn to shame and despair when she finds that her naivety has put her lovers, and their partners - including the well-meaning Janet (played by Big Zapper's Linda Marlowe, in her first role) - at risk.Stylishly shot in crisp black and white, and set against a backdrop of smoky jazz clubs, 'Ban the Bomb' marches, and evocative London locations, this finely-tuned cautionary tale was the directorial debut of Gerry O'Hara (All the Right Noises, The Brute), and is presented in a new high-definition transfer.Special features:Dual Format Edition: includes both the Blu-ray and the DVD of the film and the extrasAll films remastered to High DefinitionThe People at No. 19 (J.B. BFI Riddles of the Sphinx (Includes DVD)

Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen's visually accomplished and intellectually rigorous Riddles of the Sphinx is one of the most important avant-garde films to have emerged from Britain during the 1970s. The second collaboration between Mulvey and Wollen, both of whom are recognised as seminal figures in the field of film theory, Riddles of the Sphinx explores issues of female representation, the place of motherhood within society and the relationship between mother and daughter. Composed of a number of discrete sections, many of which are shot as continuous circular pans, the film takes place in a range of domestic and public spaces, shot in locations which include Malcolm LeGrice's kitchen and Stephen Dwoskin's bedroom. The film's ground-breaking electronic score, by The Soft Machine's Mike Ratledge, was composed on synthesisers which were developed in collaboration with Denys Irving (the man behind the mysterious and controversial 1970s band Lucifer). BFI The Epic of Everest (Includes DVD)
56.98 AUD
A film by Captain John Noel. The Official record of Mallory and Irvine's 1924 Expedition. The 1924 Everest expedition culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, and sparked an ongoing debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit. Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a specially adapted camera, Captain John Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historic significance. The film is also among the earliest filmed records of life in Tibet and features sequences at Phari Dzong (Pagri), Shekar Dzong (Xegar) and Rongbuk monastery. But what resonates so deeply is Noel's ability to frame the vulnerability, isolation and courage of people persevering in one of the world's harshest landscapes. The restoration by the BFI National Archive has transformed the quality of the surviving elements of the film and reintroduced the original coloured tints and tones. Revealed by the restoration, few images in cinema are as epic - or moving - as the final shots of a blood red sunset over the Himalayas. Features newly commissioned music score by Simon Fisher Turner. Cast and Crew: Directed by Captain John Noel. Music by Simon Fisher Turner (Caravaggio, The Great White Silence) .

BFI Battle of the Sexes
56.98 AUD
Comedy genius Peter Sellers gives one of his greatest performances in this famously subtle, sharp-edged satire on sexual politics in the 1950s workplace, directed by Ealing legend Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob, A Fish Called Wanda). The sleepy staff of Macpherson’s traditional Scottish tweed firm get a rude awakening when young Macpherson (Robert Morley, Theatre of Blood) hires feisty American efficiency expert Angela Barrows (Constance Cummings, Blithe Spirit). She advocates new-fangled horrors like automation and – ghastliest of all – ‘synthetic fibres’. Can nothing stop her? Nothing, perhaps but for meek accountant Mr Martin (Sellers). Beneath a placid surface, still waters run deep; to balance the books, he must erase the ‘error’… Extras/Episodes: Presented in High Definition and Standard Definition Hancock’s Hard Boiled Eggs: Sellers’ contemporary, the Lad from East Cheam himself, Tony Hancock, appears with The Battle of the Sexes’ Patricia Hayes in this cracking collection of eleven egg-cellent Egg Marketing Board adverts from 1966 A Ghost of a Chance (1968, 50 mins): bonus feature-length fun for all the family as Sellers’ chum Graham Stark stars with Ronnie Barker, Patricia Hayes, Jimmy Edwards, Bernard Cribbin and Terry Scott in a corking Children’s Film Foundation comedy Images of Edinburgh in Archive Film: an atmospheric selection of rarely-seen short films capturing Scotland’s capital in the first half of the twentieth century, from the vaults of the BFI National Archive Woolly Wonders: Evocative 1940s archive films of traditional Scottish cloth-making, shot in colour by the great Jack Cardiff Image gallery ***FIRST PRESSING ONLY*** Fully illustrated booklet with new writing on the film by Vic Pratt, biographies of Charles Crichton, Constance Cummings, Robert Morley and James Thurber by Kieron McCormack and full film credits
